Barricade Rear Bumper

When I purchased my 34 inch tires, I knew I had to change my rear bumper to accommodate a larger spare. The stock attachment to the tailgate is not a good option for large, heavy tires. The added weight can fatigue the tailgate and break the hinges. But, at the time I didn't have the money for a fifth tire, wheel and rear bumper with a swing out tire carrier, so I am running with a 33 inch spare tire. Not an optimal solution for sure.

Now, thanks to the great folks at Extreme Terrain, I have taken the first step into solving this issue - installing a rear bumper with a swing out tire carrier - the Barricade Trail Force HD Rear Bumper w/ Tire Carrier.

First, looks. This bumper looks awesome! I really like the angles on the bumper, D-rings, integrated receiver and billet aluminum handle. It's a very simple, but rugged look - exactly what I was looking for.

Build. This bumper seems very solidly built. And it's heavy. It's made of 3/16" steel plating and weighs about 160 lbs total with everything installed.

Fit and finish. The bumper fits very well on my Jeep. Everything lines up nicely. The black powder coating matches the look of the other accessories on my Jeep. Awesome.

Installation. Installation was quick and easy with no drilling required. Although the supplied instructions were not all that great, the install was easy enough that it didn't matter much. It took us about 2.5 hours to install the bumper.

Function. First impressions are very good. I really like the way the latch works and it seems very stout. The swing out tire carrier is smooth and easy to use.


NOTE: These are not meant to be official instructions and should not be taken as such. The following should only be used as information on how I installed my bumper. Follow the instruction manual that came with your bumper.

The stock rear bumper on my Jeep

Here's what comes with your bumper from Extreme Terrain:

You get the bumper, swing out tire carrier, L and straight mounting brackets, the billet aluminum handle, the adjustable rear tire support and the applicable bolts, nuts and washers.

Step One: Remove spare tire

You can keep and use the existing lug nuts or use the ones that come with the bumper. Put the spare tire aside for now.

Step Two: Disconnect third brake light

Pop open the rear access panel in the tailgate. This can typically be done using your fingers to pop it off.

There are two tabs that may require a screw driver to pry off. I have done it both ways.

Once you've popped this off, find the third brake light connector (see below). Press the tab and pull to disconnect.

Pull the wires through the access hole toward the outside of the Jeep (the wires will be on the outside).

Step Three: Remove spare tire carrier

Here's the stock spare tire carrier. You can also see the aluminum CB antenna mount on the right side of the carrier. If you have this, you will also need to take this off. Remove the carrier by removing the 8-13mm bolts.

Once the carrier is removed, you can clean off all the dust that had accumulated behind it with a clean, damp cloth.

Finally, reinstall the 8-13mm bolts.

Step Four: Remove stock bumper

The bumper is connected to the Jeep with L-shaped brackets to the frame that have 2-16mm bolts on each side (not 15mm as the instructions state).

Remove two bolts each side.

In addition, there are two more 16mm bolts that connect the bumper to the tube frame. The easiest way to remove these bolts is to remove them from the tube frame. These are located near the quarter points along the bumper. These are not called out in the factory instructions.

Once these have been removed, the bumper can be removed. This isn't as easy as it sounds. The two brackets along the quarter points angle down and don't allow you to directly remove the bumper. It must be rotated down as you pull it off. We also had to slightly bend the plastic molding on the bumper.

This "bumper" is mostly plastic and very lightweight. Maybe twenty pounds. It's amazing that you're replacing this thing with a 160 lb bumper.

Step Five (if needed): Remove towing receiver if present

If you have a factory installed towing receiver, it must be removed. This is done by removing the four 18mm bolts from behind the bumper.

Once the bolts are removed, you may need to get a hammer and tap the top of the receiver to remove it from the tube frame. Once it's removed, pry out the trailer electrical connection from the receiver and secure it out of the way next to the frame with some zip ties.

Step Six: Remove stock tow hook

To remove the stock tow hook, you will need to remove the two 18mm bolts through the side of the frame and the one bottom bolt. Take out hook and inside plate.

Step Seven: Install L-brackets

Before installing the L-brackets, you may need to break off a screw in the way on the driver's side frame. The installation notes don't cover this and I have no idea what this screw is for, but it was along the bottom of the frame and would not allow us to put in the L-bracket far enough to align it. Try pushing the L-bracket into the frame, if it stops before it aligns with the installation holes (and flush with the end of the frame), you may need to do the following step. If not, you're good to go.

To break off the screw, we had to use a chisel (or tough screw driver) and hammer to break it off. It only took about 10-20 hits with the hammer before we were able to break it off and put in the L-bracket.

Next, install the L-brackets on each side of the frame. The "L" should point toward the interior of the Jeep.

The end of the bracket should be flush with the frame and align with the existing holes.

Step Eight: Install mounting bracket in center of bumper

Align the flat plate with the four existing holes (the ones which are used for the receiver) and push in the long bolts (with washers). These can be a little difficult to get in the hole and need to be angled in. Once through, leave them in place.

Step Nine: Install bumper

This needs two people. Lift bumper up and line up the end plates with the outside of the frame and the four center connections with the bolts installed in the previous step. Once aligned, install lock washers and locking nuts on center bolts. Hand tighten.

Also, install bolts through bumper plates and into L-brackets in the frame. Hand tighten. Once bumper is completely aligned, tighten all bolts/nuts.

Step Ten: Install swing out tire carrier

First, you need to grease the post. The instructions recommend this, but it should be required. We were able to put it on without grease, but it barely turned. We removed it and greased the post. Then we put it on again. We used a 2x4 wood stud and a hammer to "help" the carrier move down on the post.

Once the carrier is on, put on the top cap and secure it with the metric allen wrench.

Step Eleven: Install handle

Push the aluminum handle into the end of the tire carrier and secure it with the two supplied 17mm bolts.

Step Twelve: Install tire carrier support

Take your best guess or measure your tire to see where along the tire carrier support will best fit your tire. This may take a few iterations to find the right spot. When you're done, secure the tire carrier support with the four supplied bolts. I positioned the open side of the channel down so it would not collect dust, water and debris.

After you've installed the support, you can adjust the distance away from the frame your spare tire is by loosening the adjustment bolts on either side of the support. This may also take some iteration as you want it as close to the frame as you can without putting a lot of pressure on the tire itself. Once you've found the correct distance, secure the four bolts (two each side).

Step Thirteen: Install spare tire

Reinstall your spare tire and secure with lug nuts.

There. You're done. Pretty easy stuff and it looks great.

The bottom line

So far, I really like the bumper and swing out tire carrier. It looks great and seems very rugged. It is a good value and will probably work very well for most people if they don't ever want to tow a trailer. I would recommend purchasing this bumper.
