My name is Emily Huddleston and I’m a senior at the University of Arizona studying journalism and environmental studies. Being outside has always been my own kind of therapy (cliché, but true). Whether it’s hiking down a canyon, biking my way through Tucson, or canoeing on a river, you can sign me up. I’m extremely lucky to call Arizona home.
When I’m not waking up at 6 a.m. to embark on an adventure I spend my time writing, obsessing over music, films and podcasts, and scoping out the area for the best coffee shop. Along with my passion for storytelling, I love the environment and am constantly looking for ways to combine those interesting into a future career. I hope to one day be an environmental reporter or work for National Public Radio.
Being an Arizona native has forced me to look past the dreadful summer heat and focus on the many hidden treasures this state has to offer. I am excited to spend my summer bringing you stories that will make you love this wonderful place just as much as I do.
Emily's Adventures with Experience Arizona
What is Your Favorite Outdoor Spot in Arizona
Arizona is full of outdoor adventures. From hiking and skiing to mountain biking and kayaking, Arizona has it all. But which of these adventures is your favorite? Which place stands out among the rest? I chatted with a few Tucsonans to learn just that.
Witnessing the Paranormal
Legends of cowboy spirits, haunted hotels and spooky mines are embedded in Arizona’s rich history. These unsolved mysteries loom over cities, homes and people here in the West. Luckily there are a select few who are dedicated to discovering the truth: paranormal investigators. I sat down with two of Arizona’s finest paranormal investigators at the haunted, Steam Pump Ranch in Oro Valley. We discussed what it means to investigate the paranormal, what ghosts look like, the history and haunting of Steam Pump Ranch and much more. The natural beauty of Arizona draws people here from around the world but maybe there is more to this state than what meets the eye.
Flagstaff Lava Caves
A persistent chill and complete darkness fills the Lava River Cave in Flagstaff, Arizona. 700,000 years ago molten rock erupted from a volcano vent, forming an underground flowing river of lava. Today one of Arizona's most thrilling attractions, The Lava River Cave remains. This cave is an otherworldly adventure and a perfect place to cool off from the summer heat.
Phoenix Mystery Castle
Phoenix, Arizona is home to a mansion full of secrets and treasures – a strange castle built in the 1930's with a mixture of materials such as distorted bricks, wagon wheels and automobile parts which form its 18 rooms. The castle was dedicated to a woman named Mary Lou Gulley who lived there until her death in 2010. Here’s the story of one of the most unique and visited places in the West – Phoenix’s Mystery Castle.
